Noam Zion: Scholar in Residence

Dear Parents,

Master teacher Noam Zion of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem speaks on Monday at 8 PM at the JCC on a topic of great interest to us: the allocation of tzedakah and the Talmud's culture of "giving" , which is radically different from Christian charity and Greek philanthropy. Talmudic discussions resolving resource allocation dilemmas can help us to determine how to decide our priorities among the important competing institutions and demands for our dollars here in Houston, in Israel, Argentina and elsewhere. What does the Talmud tell us about supporting our schools?

On Thursday, Professor Zion talks at 8 PM at the JCC about the revolutionary holiday - Shabbat! You can expect to take home information to enrich yours and your family's observance of Shabbat. read more...

2nd Grade Arboretum trip

Dear Parents,

This year we are delighted to be taking our second graders to the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center on Sunday, February 4 in honor of Tu B’Shvat. Tu B’Shvat is the holiday of the trees. Judaism has always been a strong supporter of ecology and taking care of the earth. The children will be exploring how nature recycles nutrients through the process of decomposition. It is important for them to see first hand how we as Jews value nature. read more...

7th Grade to Holocaust Museum

Dear Kita Zayin Parents,

As part of our Holocaust curriculum in the 7th grade, we will be taking a field trip to the Holocaust Museum on Sunday, February 4 to view the exhibits. There will be a docent to guide them through the museum and explain what they are viewing. While this is a painful event in our history, it is one that our children need to know about. read more...
