1:00 PM - 1:45 PMBarg SanctuaryThe Texas Historical Commission has designated Congregation Beth Yeshurun as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark -- the highest honor the State can bestow on a structure. This designation was based on Beth Yeshurun’s significant history, our building’s architectural merit and its status as an exemplary model of preservation.
From the founding of Adath Yeshurun in 1891, Beth Yeshurun has grown to become the largest Conservative Congregation in the United States. We have been at the forefront of the Conservative Movement for among other things establishing the first Synagogue-affiliated Day School in the United States and assuming a leadership role in achieving women’s ritual rights.
Our mid-century modern Synagogue (1962) was designed by noted architects Eugene Werlin and Lenard Gabert, Sr. We were honored by Preservation Houston on March 25, 2021, as a recipient of the Good Brick Award for outstanding contributions to the preservation, restoration and enhancement of Houston’s architectural and cultural heritage.
Both the Texas Historical Landmark Designation and Good Brick Award are noteworthy honors because in most instances these designations are given to much older buildings -- usually of pre-World War II vintage.
Please join us for the dedication of the historical marker at 1:00pm on October 23rd in the Barg Sanctuary at Congregation Beth Yeshurun followed by a dessert reception.
Sorry, Registration has ended.
