Taught by Rabbi Brian Strauss We will explore questions related to what a relationship in God and a life of faith entails: Where does faith come from? What are the models in Jewish tradition for a complex relationship with God which includes reverence and joy, but also anger and argument? Where does doubt fit into a life of faith? Prayerbook Hebrew with Cantor Diane Dorf | Sundays 9a: Learn how to lead the Hebrew prayers for the Saturday morning service, and chant a few verses from the Torah.
Introduction to Hebrew with Cantor Diane Dorf | Sundays 10a: Learn to read Hebrew and recognize essential prayer vocabulary. This course is open to everyone, but is required for the Invitation to Judaism students.
Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict with Rabbi Danny Horwitz | Sundays 10a: Through the study of Jewish narratives about Israel and the unpacking of the complex meanings of peace in Jewish tradition, participants are invited to explore the ideas and values that animate different attitudes toward the conflict and how these values shape their own political understandings. Abraham Heschel’s The Prophets with Rabbi Danny Horwitz | Sundays 11a: Who were the prophets of Israel; what was their message and what does it bring us today? Abraham Joshua Heschel, perhaps the greatest Jewish thinker of the 20th century, gave us important and previously neglected insights about their teachings. Jewish Literacy with Rabbi Danny Horwitz | Tuesdays 7:30p: Over the course of the year we will explore: General Jewish history, Critical stories and themes in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh), Fundamental Jewish life behaviors, what they mean and what they teach, Jewish theology - What do we think about God, the afterlife and other big ideas.
