Celebrate Passover with Beth Yeshurun
Passover begins before sundown on Saturday, April 12, and ends after nightfall on Sunday, April 20.
There are several opportunities to celebrate Passover at Beth Yeshurun, and we look forward to helping you and your family celebrate this year! From programs including Ta'anit Bechorot (Fast of the First Born) sponsored by 100 Jewish Men, MyChag:Pesach for elementary school students, and Passover-To-Go meals. Visit bethyeshurun.org/passover for all of our Passover resources including selling your hametz, the complete service schedule, and the 2025/5785 Passover Guide. Sell Your Hametz No later than 10:00 AM on Friday, April 11 The Torah prohibits the ownership of hametz during Pesach, and there is a three-step process to rid oneself of it. Mechirat Hametz (selling of hametz) can be arranged until 10 A.M. on Friday, April 11, 2025. The Rabbi sells the hametz to a non-Jew and arranges for its return after the holiday. The hametz must be stored out of sight and not used. Bedikat Hametz (searching for hametz) occurs at sunset on Thursday, April 10, where we ensure all hametz is stored properly and prepare the house for Passover, traditionally using a candle, spoon, and feather. Bi'ur Hametz (burning of hametz) happens by 10 A.M. on Friday, April 11, when any remaining hametz is burned. Click here to sell you Hametz!

Yizkor Book - Passover Addendum | Deadline: Monday, April 14 Yizkor is soon approaching, a time when we honor the memory of our loved ones. Passover Yizkor Services will take place on Sunday morning, April 20th. The Yizkor Book will be distributed at the synagogue on Yizkor. The entire Yizkor Book is also available electronically on our website. To ensure that the names of your loved ones will be memorialized in our 5785 Yizkor Book Passover Addendum, the form below must be submitted by Monday, April 14, 2025. Sell Your Hametz No later than 10:00 AM on Friday, April 11 The Torah prohibits the ownership of hametz during Pesach, and there is a three-step process to rid oneself of it. Mechirat Hametz (selling of hametz) can be arranged until 10 A.M. on Friday, April 11, 2025. The Rabbi sells the hametz to a non-Jew and arranges for its return after the holiday. The hametz must be stored out of sight and not used. Bedikat Hametz (searching for hametz) occurs at sunset on Thursday, April 10, where we ensure all hametz is stored properly and prepare the house for Passover, traditionally using a candle, spoon, and feather. Yizkor Book - Passover Addendum | Deadline: Monday, April 14 Yizkor is soon approaching, a time when we honor the memory of our loved ones. Passover Yizkor Services will take place on Sunday morning, April 20th. The Yizkor Book will be distributed at the synagogue on Yizkor. The entire Yizkor Book is also available electronically on our website. To ensure that the names of your loved ones will be memorialized in our 5785 Yizkor Book Passover Addendum, the form below must be submitted by Monday, April 14, 2025. Join our friends in the Senior Chai group at HCRJ for a trip to the Golden Nugget Casino in Lake Charles, Lousiana! We will meet at 8:00am at HCRJ (801 Bering Dr.) for a light breakfast and coffee and then head out on a comfy bus to the Golden Nugget Casino in Lake Charles by 8:30A. What a night! Carnival: The Biggest Party, was a true celebration of Rabbi Morgen’s incredible 27 years of leadership. Guests walked the red carpet, soaked in the steel drum tunes, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere with vibrant dancers, a Champagne Diva, and aerialists. At the heart of the night, we shared a special tribute video and book, filled with heartfelt messages from our community. We also rallied together for Paddles Up, to raise funds for something close to Rabbi Morgen's heart, Jewish education, supporting religious school scholarships and enhancing family engagement programs. We are excited to welcomeour final Rabbinic Candidate, David Mendelson, to Beth Yeshurun during his weekend visit from Friday, February 21, through Sunday, February 23. David will lead part of the Shabbat service, give the D'var Torah in the Chapel and Museum Minyan, and join MyShabbat on Saturday. He will also join us for the Kiddush luncheon following services. On Sunday, David will visit with our Religious School students. Join us this Shabbat Renewal as we celebrate JDAIM (Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month). The purpose of JDAIM is to unite Jewish communities to raise awareness and champion the rights of all Jews, including Jews with disabilities, to be respected, valued, and included in all aspects of Jewish community life. This year, we have invited members of our disability community who have been attending our holiday inclusion events for years to join us on the bimah and lead us in Shabbat Renewal.

Join the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston here at Congregation Beth Yeshurun for Yom Limmud 2025, for a day of meaningful learning and connection. This year’s theme, Am Yisrael Chai, celebrates Jewish resilience post-October 7 through diverse classes on Jewish texts, arts, wellness, Israel, antisemitism, public affairs, and more. Keynote speaker Dr. Mijal Bitton, co-host of Wondering Jews, along with an incredible lineup of sessions featuring experts like Dean Bell on combating antisemitism, David Ilan on archeology, Shir Benjamin on Israeli cooking, and Avi Posen unpacking October 7 through music will be featured. We are excited to welcome Rabbinic Candidate Nico Losorelli to Beth Yeshurun during his weekend visit from Friday, January 24, through Sunday, January 26. Nico will deliver the sermon during Shabbat Renewal on Friday evening, give the D'var Torah in the Chapel and at the Museum Minyan on Saturday morning, and join us for the Kiddush luncheon afterward. On Sunday, Nico will visit with our Religious School students. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience his leadership and teaching style firsthand, and we encourage you to provide feedback afterward to help guide this important decision for our congregation. Join Holocaust Musuem Houston for a compelling talk by Amir Tibon, an award-winning Haaretz correspondent, as he shares the true story of how his family was rescued from Kibbutz Nahal Oz on October 7, 2023, by his father, a retired IDF general. Tibon, author of The Last Palestinian, has also served as a senior editor for Haaretz and lived in Washington, DC, as a foreign correspondent. Our current covers are worn, and we're partnering once again with renowned artist Jeanette Kuvin Oren, who designed our beautiful hand-dyed velvet covers. Contributions at any level will help us purchase the new High Holy Day Torah covers. Shalva's Art Exhibit of Hope
On Display Through November 18
We invite you to experience the Art Exhibit of Hope by Shalva, a Jerusalem-based organization supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. This powerful exhibit showcases artwork created by young adults and teenagers in Shalva’s therapeutic art program, including those evacuated during the recent conflict in Israel. Each piece reflects the resilience and emotional journey of those affected.
The exhibit will remain on display at Beth Yeshurun through November 18. We encourage you to visit and witness this moving collection that highlights the strength and spirit of Israeli society in challenging times.

JTS Student Ambassador Joe Blumberg
Shabbat Renewal | Friday, November 1st at 6:00 PM We're thrilled to introduce Joe Blumberg, a third-year rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Originally from Lexington, Massachusetts, Joe shifted from a classical music career to Jewish education, serving at Brown RISD Hillel and as a Fulbright scholar in Jerusalem.
Most recently, he was a fellow at Dayenu: A Jewish Call to Climate Action. Joe has interned at Congregation Shearith Israel in Dallas and Beth Israel Congregation in Bath, Maine, and holds a B.A. in American History from Yale.

Today is October 7
Today marks one year since the tragic events of October 7th. As we come together with Jewish communities worldwide, we remember the innocent lives lost and honor the heroes who showed remarkable courage in the face of darkness.
Our hearts ache for the families enduring unimaginable loss and for the 101 hostages still held captive. We pray for their safe return and stand united in our grief.
In reflecting on this day, let us draw strength from our shared spirit and faith. Together, we hold onto hope for peace, security, and a brighter future for all.

October 7 Commemoration
Monday, October 7, 7:15P at Beth Yeshurun
Beth Yeshurun is proud to partner with the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and more than 40 other local nonprofit Jewish organizations to host a community-wide vigil to commemorate the tragedy of October 7. The evening’s program will be focused on “Remembrance, Unity, and Hope” and include songs, prayers, and remarks from community leaders.
REGISTATION IS NOW CLOSED: We are at capacity for the event in both the main sanctuary and the overflow seating and unable to add any additional names. If you have not received your ticket(s), please check for a large white envelope from the synagogue marked “High Holy Day Tickets & Information Enclosed” in red, as the tickets would have been included in this mailing. Membership lists will be available at the door, and a day pass can be issued if your account is in good standing. Accounts paid through June 2024 are considered in good standing. Please refer to your last billing statement for more details.

Yizkor Book Deadline has passed - Addendum Names can still be submitted
Yizkor services are approaching: Yom Kippur Yizkor on Saturday, October 12, and Shemini Atzeret Yizkor on Thursday, October 24. Our Congregational Yizkor Book will feature names of loved ones and be available at the synagogue, by mail, or online. To include names in the 5785 Yizkor Book Addendum for Yom Kippur,click here to submit the form online or in person to the synagogue by end of day Today, Monday, October 7. Late submissions may not be printed in Yom Kippur Addendum but will be included in future addenda.Forms for the Reverent Tribute section honoring military veterans are also online.Once a name is included in this section, no further submission is needed in subsequent years.

Celebrate Sukkot with two exciting events! First, on Tuesday, October 15 at 6:00PM, join us for the annual Sisterhood: Robyn Shkolnick Sisters in the Hut, where Houston-area Sisterhoods will enjoy light bites and create canvas panels to decorate our sukkah in honor of Robyn Shkolnick, z"l. Then, on Sunday, October 20 at 5:30PM, gather for the Mexukkah! Celebration in the Sukkah—a fun evening for all ages with lulav and etrog shaking, a fajita dinner, and engaging activities. October 7 Commemoration
Monday, October 7, 7:15P at Beth Yeshurun
Beth Yeshurun is proud to partner with the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and more than 40 other local nonprofit Jewish organizations to host a community-wide vigil to commemorate the tragedy of October 7. This event is free and open to the public. It will be held on Monday, October 7 at 7:15 PM at Congregation Beth Yeshurun. The evening’s program will be focused on “Remembrance, Unity, and Hope” and include songs, prayers, and remarks from community leaders.
Seating in the Barg Sanctuary and Pulaski Rauch Auditorium is currently at capacity. Overflow seating will be available in the Freedman-Levit Sanctuary, where the program will be screened.
