The documentary, produced by the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s film division, Moriah Films, began filming during the final months of Prime Minister Peres’ life before he suffered a stroke and passed away in September of 2016 at 93.
The film is punctuated by world leaders speaking of their experiences with Peres, among them British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Moving the film along is the narration of actor George Clooney. The filmmakers distilled the two-hour documentary from over 60 hours of interviews and many years of research.
Private Time at the Ark Sunday, September 18th 10:00am - 12:00pm | Barg Sanctuary 3:00pm - 5:00pm | Freedman Levit Sanctuary
Prepare for the High Holy Days by spending a few private minutes with our clergy before the open Ark in Sanctuary. Each individual or family will be on the bimah with just a clergy member, who will offer a special prayer for you to say together before the Ark. What better way to get in the right mindset to begin the High Holy Day season!
Sunday, September 11 | 11:00am Free and open to the community Come a few minutes early and enjoy some coffee and pastries before our talk begins!
The central prayer of the High Holy Days - Unetaneh Tokef - paints a dire prediction for the year ahead: Who will live and who will die? As we get ready for the High Holy Day season, Rabbi Steven Morgen will explore the brilliant way the Unetaneh Tokef was constructed by some Jewish “Shakespeare” from snippets of Bible and Rabbinic commentary. Then we will put the pieces together with a modern spin that will deepen and enrich our prayer experience during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
When a Heretic and a Rabbi Walk Into a Bar Presented by Beth Yeshurun and Americans for Ben-Gurion University
Monday, September 12th | 7:30pm | Stein Hall Free to the Community | Dessert Reception Following
What happens when a rabbi and a heretic meet? Sound crazy? Well, it’s not! There are many such fascinating stories in our history. Join us as we explore what happens when two opposites meet with Associate Professor Michal Bar-Asher Siegal. She is a faculty member at The Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and was the Rosen Family Career Development Chair in Judaic Studies at Ben Gurion University (2012-2016). In this academic year, she is the Horace Goldsmith Visiting Professor in Judaic Studies at Yale University.
Beth Yeshurun is joining Faith Organizations across Houston - Muslim, Christian, and Jewish - in a friendly competition to collect food for the Houston Food Bank during National Hunger Awareness Month.
The competition kicks off September 1st and ends on the 30th. We’ll keep track of food collected and post the latest results weekly here on this website. Clergy and educators at the faith centers will provide faith-based messaging about hunger in their communities. Please contribute your non-perishable, not-expired foods throughout the month of September! We will keep you posted on our progress and how we are doing in the "competition"!
We will have donation bins: In the Bender Levy Lobby (the synagogue entrance at the "carpool" lane) In the Administrative Lobby (where the staff and Rabbi's offices are)
We invite you to share with us your simchas - births, engagement, weddings, or award and recognitions. Fill our Mazel Tov form with your information a picture and share your great news with the rest of the congregation. Click here to Submit your Simcha!
