The Beth Yeshurun Chesed Project was formed at the onset of the Covid 19 quarantine as a “reach-in” to our older or more isolated members. It acts as a voice from the synagogue assuring that we care, they are not alone, and we are here to fulfill their spiritual needs and direct them to Jewish community social services that are available if necessary.
These few minutes of social interaction are so appreciated by the BY members most vulnerable in these challenging times. Our volunteers are also enjoying the connections being made and have gotten to know these wonderful members. We’re also learning how to better serve this valued segment of our BY family which will carry-over beyond the pandemic.
To experience meaningful High Holy Days, our Chesed Project volunteers will specifically be checking-in to ensure those members most vulnerable know when and how to watch our virtual services and have what they need. This committee is Chaired by Jonathan Baliff, Vice Chaired by Lu Dorfman, with Rabbinical oversight by Rabbi Fort. The program is administratively managed by Mindi Stern, Director of Member Relations. If you would like to join the Chesed Project, please email Mindi at mstern@bethyeshurun.org

YIZKOR 5781
Yizkor is soon approaching, a time when we honor the memory of our loved ones. Yom Kippur Yizkor Services will take place on Monday morning, September 28th and Shemini Atzeret Yizkor Services will take place on Saturday morning, October 10th.
Our Congregational Yizkor Book will be published to bring focus to the names of our dear family and loved ones. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Yizkor Book will be available to the Congregation for distribution via mail or pick up at the synagogue. The entire Yizkor Book will also be available electronically on our website.
To ensure that the names of your loved ones will be memorialized in our 5781 Yizkor Book, please complete your Yizkor Book form online at www.bethyeshurun.org/yizkor. Paper forms have also been mailed to your home and should be arriving within the next week. Paper forms must arrive in the synagogue office by Friday, August 21, 2020. Names received after August 21, 2020 might not be printed in the memorial book, but will be included in the online version of the book available on the Beth Yeshurun website as well as the printed addendum.
Also included, is the form for the Reverent Tribute section of our Yizkor Book, which is dedicated to the members of Beth Yeshurun, of blessed memory, who served in the United States military to protect our freedom. Please list the name(s) of your loved ones who you wish to include in the Reverent Tribute section in the back of the Yizkor book.
Please return either or both of these forms by Friday, August 21, 2020. Your forms may be completed online at www.bethyeshurun.org/yizkor or may be mailed to the synagogue, care of Jennifer Sutton. Should you have any questions, please contact Jennifer directly at 713-666-1881 x 315 or jsutton@bethyeshurun.org
We are deeply thankful for your support and hope that Beth Yeshurun’s Yizkor Book of Remembrance provides a source of comfort for you and our Congregation.

If you receive an email that appears to be from the clergy or staff, asking you to take some kind of unusual action - click a link or download an attachment you didn't request, wire money to a specified account, purchase gift cards and reply with the serial numbers, or simply to reply quickly, beware - it could be a form of email "phishing" known as "whaling."
You can't stop the senders of "whaling" emails, but what you can do - which is entirely free - is educate yourself and other potential recipients. Here are two simple guidelines to help potential recipients avoid being tricked:
Verify the "from" email. The malicious actors behind "whaling" attacks are counting on people springing into action as soon as they see an important name on an email. You can outsmart them by looking beyond the name and checking the "from" email address to see if it matches what you know the alleged sender's email to be.
If you only see a name, you can cause the "from" email address to be displayed by hovering the cursor over the name.
Clergy and staff will always have an email address ending with @bethyeshurun.org. No other variation of his email address is official.
Confirm requests with a conversation. Even if the email seems legitimate, if a request seems even remotely "off," don't act on it until you confirm it with a phone call or face-to-face conversation. DO NOT reply to the suspicious email or text. Likewise, if a member of your clergy staff is asking you to do something unusual, confirm with a phone call.
These two steps will go a long way in identifying and avoiding "whaling" attacks before they get their hooks in you.
