Due to increasing number of positive Covid cases not just in our city, but in our Beth Yeshurun community, as well as the latest news from the CDC, local and state officials, and our medical advisors, the following COVID-related protocols are now in effect:

All main sanctuary services will be in Barg Sanctuary.
Shabbat Morning Chapel services will be moved to the Freedman Levit Sanctuary.
Weekday Chapel services will remain in the J.B. Greenfield Chapel.
All Chapel Breakfasts will be moved outdoors.
All employees, members, and visitors must wear masks when inside our building.

These changes will remain in effect through the end of the year.
We will reevaluate after January 1st.

Please note that these protocols apply only to the synagogue and not the Religious School or Day School, which will continue with their existing protocols.

Sunday, January 9 at 11:00am - In the years before World War I, almost 10,000 Jewish immigrants came to the United States through the port at Galveston, rather than Ellis Island. From there, they fanned out across Texas and dozens of cities towns in the South and Midwest. This presentation by Dr. Josh Furman will explore the history of the Galveston Movement, the goals of the organizers, and the legacy of the project. We will also get to read (in translation) the advertising pamphlet that was used to recruit Yiddish-speaking Jews to make the trip to Texas in 1907!

Tu B’Shevat for Young Professionals
Sunday, January 16, 2022
Join us for Tu B’Shevat - the birthday of the trees! To celebrate we will explore our Houston Arboretum with a Tu B’Shevat-themed photo scavenger hunt. Afterward, we will gather for a Tu B’Shevat Seder with traditional food and drink for the holiday. Enjoy a day outside and learn about this special holiday.

Willow Waterhole Tu B'Shevat Service Project
Monday, January 17, 2022
This year Tu B'Shevat and MLK Day fall on the same day! What better inspiration for a service project to help clean up one of our local green spots, Willow Waterhole Greenway.

If you'd like to enjoy the outdoors before we start, meet at 12:30 pm to picnic (bring your own lunch or snacks, we will bring drinks). At 1:00 pm we will start our clean-up project. We will head out in groups to pick up trash around the lakes at Willow Water Hole.

We will have a special Tu B'shevat Seder-in-a-bag for everyone to take away, so please register so we have supplies for all! Registration closes Friday, January 14th at Noon.

Join the Greater Houston Area Jewish Community for the sixth time, assembling as a group to march in downtown Houston on Monday, January 17, 2022.

Will you join us as we march to commemorate and celebrate our long history of Jewish solidarity with interfaith civil rights groups? Our parade group always has an amazing and genuinely fun time performing this fantastic community outreach mitzvah marching in the Houston MLK Grande Parade.

This is not only fun for the participants, especially our youth, it generates positive results in relations between the Jewish & African American communities as we march in solidarity. Our participation honors not just Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but rabbis like Abraham Heschel and Joachim Prinz who worked closely with Dr. King and the civil rights movement. We intend to not only talk the talk, we will walk the walk.

Phase One of Central HVAC System Upgrade Continues

Construction work will take place impacting weekday access to the Synagogue Business and Clergy offices and the North door leading to the J.B. Greenfield Chapel.

During this period, the Business and Clergy offices will only be accessible from the Administration Entrance on the Northeast side of the property, closest to Beechnut. Access the J.B. Greenfield Chapel by entering through the Bender Levy Lobby and following the hallway past the Museum and Freedman Levit Sanctuary, through the glass doors that lead to the Memorial Hall.

This is the first phase of a major project to modernize our Central HVAC System (heating, cooling, and control), replacing some components that are almost 60 years old, proceeding in phases through Spring 2022.

Construction activity will only take place Monday through Friday concluding before 4:00pm each week. Pedestrian traffic to the Barg Sanctuary and Pulaski Rauch Auditorium will not be impacted on Shabbat or Sundays.

For fully vaccinated congregants and guests of all ages,
masks are now optional indoors and outdoors. Any congregant that feels more comfortable wearing a mask is welcome to continue.

Congregants 5 and over that are not fully vaccinated
should continue joining us virtually for programs and services.

Congregants 5 to 11 that are newly eligible to be vaccinated
should continue wearing masks indoors. As they become fully vaccinated,
they can choose whether or not to wear masks.

Congregants under 5 that are not eligible to
be vaccinated should be masked when possible.

As virus transmission outdoors is significantly less than indoors,
mask-wearing for children 11 and under is optional for outdoor events.

Earlier this year Beth Yeshurun received one of Preservation Houston’s prestigious Good Brick Awards for our restoration efforts following Hurricane Harvey. Preservation Houston now has selected Beth Yeshurun to be among a small group of prior award recipients to be part of its annual Good Brick Tour.

The three other properties on the tour are: the Riesner Tenant House (a 2020 Award recipient), the National Cash Register Building (a 2011 recipient)*, and the Gulf Building, now called The Jones on Main (a 1987 and 2004 recipient for various stages of restoration). No matter our age, we can learn a lot from those who have gone before us. This talk will discuss the lessons learned in Tom Cole’s book, Old Man Country: My Search for Meaning among the Elders. The book is based on Cole’s conversations with 12 accomplished and famous men in their 80s and above, and includes sections on Tom’s own experience of growing up and growing older.

The talk will revolve around and ask the audience to think about four questions: “Am I Still a Man?” “Do I Still Matter?” “What is the Meaning of My Life?” and “Am I Still Loved?”

In December, Rabbi Morgen is joined by Professor Matthias Henze for It Is Good to Give Thanks to God: Psalm 118. They will discuss the meaning of the Psalm and how it is used in Jewish and Christian prayers. Professor Henze is the Isla Carroll & Percy E. Turner Professor of Biblical Studies and Director of the Program in Jewish Studies at Rice University and has done many interfaith programs with Rabbi Morgen.

Earlier this year Beth Yeshurun received one of Preservation Houston’s prestigious Good Brick Awards for our restoration efforts following Hurricane Harvey. Preservation Houston now has selected Beth Yeshurun to be among a small group of prior award recipients to be part of its annual Good Brick Tour.

Congregants can access the Beth Yeshurun video at no charge by visiting preservationhouston.org/cby and using promo code: 1891. Please note that this link and promo code are solely for our members, and we ask that you not forward to others.

The three other properties on the tour are: the Riesner Tenant House (a 2020 Award recipient), the National Cash Register Building (a 2011 recipient)*, and the Gulf Building, now called The Jones on Main (a 1987 and 2004 recipient for various stages of restoration). For fully vaccinated congregants and guests of all ages,
masks are now optional indoors and outdoors. Any congregant that feels more comfortable wearing a mask is welcome to continue.

Congregants 12 and over that are not fully vaccinated
should continue joining us virtually for programs and services.

Congregants 5 to 11 that are newly eligible to be vaccinated
should continue wearing masks indoors. As they become fully vaccinated,
they can choose whether or not to wear masks.

Congregants under 5 that are not eligible to
be vaccinated should be masked when possible.

As virus transmission outdoors is significantly less than indoors,
mask-wearing for children 11 and under is optional for outdoor events.

Parents and Grandparents: After the Facebook revelations, how can we help our children navigate social media today? What does our Jewish tradition say that might help us be guides and serve as good role models?

Together, over breakfast with Rabbi Brian Strauss, come explore the ancient wisdom of Torah and how it can be applied in today's modern world. Join us for minyan at 7:00am followed by study and breakfast at approximately 7:45am every Tuesday.

Toddlers & Preschoolers join us for a musical Shabbat with Rabbi Sarah Fort and Miss Cathy, followed by challah and more fun! We'll meet in Stein Hall and then head to the playground, weather permitting, after our musical service. Otherwise we will have fall crafts and games in Stein Hall. We ask that parents and kids that are able to please wear masks.

We invite you to share with us your simchas - births, engagement, weddings, or award and recognitions. Fill our Mazel Tov form with your information a picture and share your great news with the rest of the congregation.

What are the models in Jewish tradition for a complex relationship with God which includes reverence and joy, but also anger and argument? Where does doubt fit into a life of faith? Prayerbook Hebrew with Cantor Diane Dorf | Sundays 9a: Learn how to lead the Hebrew prayers for the Saturday morning service, and chant a few verses from the Torah.

Introduction to Hebrew with Cantor Diane Dorf | Sundays 10a: Learn to read Hebrew and recognize essential prayer vocabulary. This course is open to everyone, but is required for the Invitation to Judaism students.

Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict with Rabbi Danny Horwitz | Sundays 10a: Through the study of Jewish narratives about Israel and the unpacking of the complex meanings of peace in Jewish tradition, participants are invited to explore the ideas and values that animate different attitudes toward the conflict and how these values shape their own political understandings.

Abraham Heschel’s The Prophets with Rabbi Danny Horwitz | Sundays 11a: Who were the prophets of Israel; what was their message and what does it bring us today? Abraham Joshua Heschel, perhaps the greatest Jewish thinker of the 20th century, gave us important and previously neglected insights about their teachings.

Join us the first Friday of every month for Tot Shabbat!
The ERJCC Houston, Beth Yeshurun and BYDS are bringing Miss Cathy for Tot Shabbat! Many of your kiddos know Miss Cathy from the ERJCC. Toddlers & Preschoolers join us for a musical Shabbat with Rabbi Sarah Fort and Miss Cathy, followed by challah and more fun!

We'll meet in Stein Hall and then head to the playground, weather permitting, after our musical service. We ask that, at least for October, parents and kids that are able please wear masks.

Camp Impact is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing homeless and underprivileged youth with an opportunity to attend a summer camp. Camp Impact believes that every child deserves a summer camp experience and strives to create an atmosphere where kids can truly be kids, as they may not get this opportunity in their daily lives.

For many campers, this is the one time a year they get the chance to escape their home life and just enjoy being a child in a supportive, safe, and loving environment.

We will kick off at 6:00p with our Young Families as we Travel Through Torah. Our kids will work their way through 7 stations of crafts and games, beginning with Creation and ending with the arrival in the Promised Land. This event is geared toward preschool and younger elementary school kids. Stick around for our service following!

Teen volunteers are needed!
8th-12th graders join us from 5:45 - 7:15pm and earn hours.

At 7:00p we will have our traditional Simchat Torah service, but outdoors in our parking lot. Join all of our clergy for the hakafot - with both kids and adults - and for one of our favorite Beth Yeshurun traditions, the candy hakafah finale.

**Please bring 100 pieces of kosher candy to share**

*In case of rain Travel Through Torah and Services will take place in the Pulaski Rauch Auditorium and the Barg Sanctuary.

POSITION OPENING SOON: CEMETERY MANAGER
Beth Yeshurun Cemetery Assn (BYCA) is looking for a cemetery manager to replace the current manager who is retiring. It is a part time contract position, which reports to the BYCA board. If you have any interest please contact Jerry Paine at painej@sbcglobal.net

Taught by Rabbi Brian Strauss
We will explore questions related to what a relationship in God and a life of faith entails: Where does faith come from? What are the models in Jewish tradition for a complex relationship with God which includes reverence and joy, but also anger and argument? Where does doubt fit into a life of faith? Where do Jews who do not believe fit in?

Zaf Tahir serves as Commissioner for Houston Planning and Houston Airports. He has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cullen College (’84) and an MBA from Bauer (’99,) both at UH, and a J.D. from Thurgood Marshall (2013.) He is licensed in State of Texas as an Attorney and a Professional Engineer. Currently he has a consulting and legal practice in Houston. Tahir serves on the Board of UH Bauer College of Business.

Non-Jewish parents, grandparents, and family members, join Rabbi Sarah Fort for a 3-part series on Raising Jewish Children. Our non-Jewish families and friends are an important part of creating positive Jewish memories and identities for our children. As part of our series, we will refer to Anita Diamant’s “How to Raise a Jewish Child: A Practical Handbook for Family Life” and discuss practical ideas for being an integral part of our children’s Jewish spaces, communities, holidays, and life cycle events.

Our discussions will be over Zoom, so if you have family or friends that are not local that would like to participate we are happy for them to join us!

You will be receiving our High Holy Day mailing in the coming week which will have your tickets, detailed schedules, Meals to Go and HHD Appeal information, and a preview of programming for this year. If you do not receive it within a week or have any questions, please call our office.

Available for curbside pickup, each package comes equipped with a kosher meal prepared by our Catering Department.

After Havdalah, we will show the film "Raise the Roof," a fascinating documentary about the reconstruction of the elaborate roof and painted ceiling of the 18th century Gwoździec Synagogue in Poland by over 300 professionals from 16 countries. Following the film, Bernice Heilbrunn will share some additional information about these wooden synagogues in Poland and the importance of this project to Jewish and Polish history. Then, as part of our Selichot service, we change the mantles of our Torah scrolls to their High Holy Day white.

Each individual or family will on the bimah with just a clergy member, who will offer a special prayer for you to say together before the Ark. While you are in the synagogue, stop at our High Holy Day Pick Up:
If you've registered to borrow a Machzor Lev Shalem, they will be available for pick up.

If you will be watching one of our virtual Family Services for Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, you can pick up the Machzor for those services along with activity packets. You will be able to download these from our website as well.

The Sisterhood Gift Shop will be open for you to pick up anything you need for the High Holy Days

And we will have a fun takeaway for everyone who stops by!

Daily and Shabbat Services

Considering the news from the CDC, our local officials, and our medical advisors, we are adjusting our COVID protocols. Effective immediately:

If you have been fully vaccinated and feel comfortable, you now have the option to remove your mask while at the synagogue.
If you have not been fully vaccinated, we ask that you continue to wear a mask while at the synagogue and encourage you to get vaccinated as soon as possible if eligible. We will continue to offer virtual programs and services.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of illness, we ask that you stay home and return to the synagogue when you are free of symptoms.

Please note that these protocols apply only to the synagogue and not the Religious School or Day School, which will continue with their existing protocols. If you have a condition that weakens your immune system you may not be fully protected even if you have been vaccinated; therefore we suggest you consult with your physician before deciding to stop wearing a mask and social distancing when attending an indoor event.

Join Sisterhood in its 8th annual collaboration with JFS & Celebration Company to assemble 500 bags of Honey-less Honey Cake. We are hoping for 50 volunteers and teens can get double community service hours!

We will follow CDC / COVID19 Guidelines and provide masks and gloves for all volunteers. If you are feeling ill the day of the project, please do not attend.

Shiva Books

We are currently missing sereral copies of our mourning books used for in-home shiva minyan. If you or a loved one happen to still have theses borrowed books and/or their traveling cases, please return them to the synagogue during normal business hours or contact Gayle Schnurr at 713.666.1881.

High Holy Days 5782
We want to share the exciting news with you that we will be open for the upcoming High Holy Days. As in previous years, High Holy Day tickets will be mailed to all members in good standing later this summer. We will share more information about any necessary procedures in August.

Shiva Books

We are currently missing sereral copies of our mourning books used for in-home shiva minyan. If you or a loved one happen to still have theses borrowed books and/or their traveling cases, please return them to the synagogue during normal business hours or contact Gayle Schnurr at 713.666.1881.

In order to allow future usage of these books, we appreciate your cooperation with its return.

Daily and Shabbat Services

Considering the news from the CDC, our local officials, and our medical advisors, we are adjusting our COVID protocols. Effective immediately:

If you have been fully vaccinated and feel comfortable, you now have the option to remove your mask while at the synagogue.
If you have not been fully vaccinated, we ask that you continue to wear a mask while at the synagogue and encourage you to get vaccinated as soon as possible if eligible. We will continue to offer virtual programs and services.
We will adjust our social distancing in our sanctuaries, sitting every other row and suggesting a distance of 3-feet between congregants that are not in the same pod. Our sanctuaries are large enough for families to spread out further than the suggested 3-feet if they prefer.
Registration is no longer required for Main Sanctuary and Chapel services.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of illness, we ask that you stay home and return to the synagogue when you are free of symptoms.
