ERJCC Bookfair Opening Night at Beth Yeshurun DAN GRUNFELD - By the Grace of the Game: The Holocaust, A Basketball Legacy, and an Unprecedented American Dream Saturday, October 22 | 8:00pm
When Lily and Alex Grunfeld escaped to America after surviving the Holocaust, few could have imagined their son Ernie would overcome bullying and tragedy to succeed on the basketball court – ultimately playing for the New York Knicks, winning Olympic gold, and working as an executive for the Washington Wizards. Ernie’s son Dan, once a basketball standout himself, takes readers on his family’s epic journey. From the trauma inflicted at Auschwitz to the top of the Olympic podium, Grunfeld recounts an American tale of unprecedented scale, weaving his heritage into a story that shines a light on basketball’s ability to unite people of all backgrounds. By the Grace of the Game reminds us that love, perseverance, and legacy can survive through generations.

Clergy and educators at the faith centers will provide faith-based messaging about hunger in their communities. Please contribute your non-perishable, not-expired foods throughout the month of September! We will keep you posted on our progress and how we are doing in the "competition"!

Jewish Federation of Greater Houston Community Updates The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston is here to move our community from strength to strength by serving as the leading fundraiser, convener, and connector for our Jewish community. Recently, the Federation completed its 2022 Annual Campaign raising more than $17.7 million to support local organizations and programs as well as efforts in Israel and overseas. The Federation is pleased to announce important ways it is supporting and engaging with the community.
New Community Security Director Hired by the Federation Thanks to the generosity of Joan and Stanford z’l Alexander, the Federation was able to launch Houston’s Jewish Community Security Program and hire its first director. Alfred “Al” Tribble, a former special agent for the FBI with more than 27 years of experience, began in this role in June.
This position supports the entirety of our Jewish community. Tribble will work with leadership at our synagogues, schools, and other Jewish institutions to provide training, do threat assessments, and serve as our community liaison with law enforcement.
Because of the rise in antisemitism and gun violence, including specific incidents in Pittsburgh, Poway, and Colleyville, the Federation has undertaken this effort to help maintain community safety.
The first Town Halls on Security will be held at 7 pm on September 20 at the West Houston Jewish Community Center and on September 21 at The Emery/Weiner School. Community members are invited to attend. To register, please visit houstonjewish.org/security . On the website additional information is also available related to online trainings provided by Secure Community Network (SCN).

With no apparent end in sight, and amidst daily revelations of new atrocities by Vladimir Putin's forces, the ongoing war in Ukraine concerns each and every one of us. Since the outbreak of hostilities, we have been, and continue to be, in close contact with our Masorti/Conservative communities in Kyiv, Chernivtsi, Odessa, Kharkiv and Dnipro – who are spending unimaginable nights in bomb shelters and are trying to find refuge in the west of Ukraine and in other countries.
Masorti Olami, together with our partners at The Schechter Institutes, have been responding to the needs of our communities, providing care packages to children in Kharkiv, securing shelter and medical supplies for those in need, and organizing transport and accommodation for those fleeing their homes. To date, we have helped hundreds of individuals and families evacuate to safety, thanks to the help of Movement-wide fundraising efforts and other Jewish organizations, including UJA, JDC and IsraAid, and are working to assist many more. But our work has only just begun.
The question we must ask is: when the Russians leave, what then? Huge swathes of Ukraine already lie in ruins, along with the lives of millions of refugees who have lost their homes, families and livelihoods. Rebuilding will take years. We need to be there for them now, in the midst of the crisis, and in the aftermath, to help put the pieces back together.
That's why we have partnered together with the Cantors Assembly to present a Facebook and YouTube premiere on Sunday, June 26 at 10 AM ET: Mivtza Ukraine (Operation Ukraine), music, inspiration and hope for the people of Ukraine. We will hear beautiful music from world-class instrumentalists and some of the Masorti/Conservative Movement’s top voices. We will meet refugees–both within Ukraine and those who have fled–-listen to their stories, share prayers and messages of solidarity and inspiration from leaders of the Masorti/Conservative movement from around the world, and learn about the critical work Masorti Olami and Schechter are doing to bring relief to refugees and to lay the groundwork for rebuilding when the conflict has ended. Our goal is to unite all corners of the Masorti/Conservative Jewish world for a single hour with one purpose: to help the people of Ukraine. All funds raised will go directly to Ukraine Emergency Campaign.

The meetings combine physical movement, socialization, music, and other memory-stimulating activity in a safe and comfortable 2 hour time block, enabling caregivers to attend to their personal needs without worry. A professional staff member attends each Gathering Place to provide expert support and assistance to the volunteers. The Beth Yeshurun Sisterhood is a proud suporter of the Gathering Place.

Dear Congregant,
I am very pleased to inform you that the Board of Trustees reviewed and approved a tentative budget for the next fiscal year (2022-2023). Discussion and final vote on the budget will take place at the Board meeting on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 7:30pm, in Stein Hall.
As specified in our Constitution, the portion of this Board meeting relating to the budget is open to all members in good standing of the Congregation. A summary of the proposed budget is presented on the reverse side of this letter. We have been able to balance the budget with 4% global dues increase for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Every expense line and every opportunity for revenues has been thoroughly reviewed.
I want to express our gratitude to the hard-working members of the Budget Committee, especially committee chair Jon Feiwell, each of whom worked many, many hours to achieve this balanced budget. I would also like to thank all the members of our Board of Trustees, Controller Nicole DeLoach, and Executive Director Andy Burger.

Help us Welcome a Rescued Holocaust Torah Generously Sponsored by Barbara and Dell Coleman
A Holocaust Torah rescued from Moravia has found its new home in the J.B. Greenfield Chapel. This Kabbalistic Torah was originally brought to the United States by Rabbi Sholom Alchanan Singer of Congregation B’Nai Torah in Highland Park, IL.
Barbara Coleman’s parents, Cecil Levine Berman and Dr. Alex Martin Berman of blessed memory, were actively involved in maintaining this Torah as well as its silver and mantels. As the Ritual and Music Committee Chair, Dr. Berman meticulously oversaw its upkeep, including the preservation of the original German identification tag which accompanied the Torah while it was housed at the Moravian Synagogue.
The Memorial Scrolls Trust granted Beth Yeshurun special permission to house this important historical Torah in the Ark of our J.B. Greenfield Chapel. Barbara and Dell have generously sponsored its kashering and relocation. With its original mantles, the Torah is dressed with beautiful rimonim, a yad and breastplate, in tribute to the people of Hrance, Moravia.

Shabbat Renewal, April 1st at 6:00pm Congregant Dr. Daniel Musher will join us and share his personal connection to the first Bat Mitzvah and his Aunt Judith Kaplan.
When Judith Kaplan became the first American girl to have a bat mitzvah ceremony on March 18, 1922 at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism (SAJ), she had no idea that her actions would change Jewish communal life forever.
But something unexpected happened along the way. As increasing numbers of girls ascended the bimah, girls and women began to expect—and demand—access to ritual honors and synagogue leadership. Bat mitzvah firsts were a catalyst for expanding all women’s participation in Jewish life and paved the way for people of all genders to mark their coming-of-age in new and inclusive ways.

DAAR Charitable Foundation, in partnership with SigmaBleyzer and the Bleyzer family, has launched the Stand With Ukraine Fundraiser to help provide safety, protection and care to the people of Ukraine. Over 43 million people have remained in-country and are facing the threat of Russian aggression every minute. While many have chosen to stay by choice – to defend their country and their beliefs, others stay out of necessity – to care for aging parents, support disabled friends, or simply because they couldn’t find safe passage out of the conflict zones.

While many have chosen to stay by choice – to defend their country and their beliefs, others stay out of necessity – to care for aging parents, support disabled friends, or simply because they couldn’t find safe passage out of the conflict zones.
The Stand With Ukraine Fundraiser offers a concrete way that our friends around the world can help those 43 million Ukrainians caught in the crossfire of senseless Russian aggression. We are connected with family and friends on the ground – civilians and government officials alike. Many of you are aware of the Bleyzer family’s Ukrainian roots and the presence that SigmaBleyzer Investment Group has had in Ukraine since the fall of the Soviet Union; as a result of this history, we are uniquely positioned to not only purchase critical humanitarian aid items, but also ensure that those shipments get across the border and actually arrive in the hands of those who need them most.
The news from Ukraine continues to be dire. There are 200,000 Jews in Ukraine who have been profoundly affected by political and economic instability. They are hurting, and we would like to do our part to support the needs of those impacted.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston has set a fundraising goal of $220,000 to support JFNA’s $20 million goal to help Ukrainian Jews. They need our support.
Funds are needed to help with: Helping people make Aliyah to Israel; Securing the local community and its institutions; Maintaining critical welfare services; Assisting internally displaced people in multiple locations; Launching an emergency hotline; Securing temporary housing for people in transit; Purchasing satellite phones to maintain communications across the region; Securing five Jewish schools and training staff to manage crisis needs
