Rabbinical Assembly announced they have joined the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism as an official partner of #StandUpToJewishHate, their new national campaign to mobilize all Americans, and especially non-Jews, to combat antisemitism by using the blue square emoji - 🟦 - as a unifying symbol of support. Jews only make up 2.4% of the American population yet are the victims of 55% of religious-based hate crimes. That startling discrepancy is the cornerstone of this new campaign, created through a $25 million investment by Robert K. Kraft and his family. Rabbinical Assembly joins the Foundation, alongside a broad coalition of partnered organizations, including the League of Women Voters, Urban League, National Governors Association, the Anti-Defamation League and Hillel International to encourage its supporters to stand up to Jewish hate.
Rabbinical Assembly encourages people to #StandUpToJewishHate in a number of ways: 1. Post and share 🟦 – an emoji already available on most smartphones - as a hashtag across social media alongside a message of support for the Jewish community and commitment to stand up to Jewish hate. 2. Activate your network by making them aware of the #StandUpToJewishHate campaign and how they can use 🟦 as a powerful symbol of solidarity with the Jewish community. 3. Tell your story to followers on social media, describing an instance where you’ve either encountered antisemitism and how it affected you or witnessed someone standing up against hatred towards Jews. 4. Visit www.StandUpToJewishHate.org and subscribe to the Foundation’s ”From the Command Center” e-newsletter to keep up to date on how antisemitism is spreading online, learn ways to identify and report it, and find helpful tools and resources around antisemitism. 5. Follow the #StandUpToJewishHate campaign at @StandUpToJewishHate on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to keep up-to-date with 🟦 and learn more about antisemitism. 6. Report antisemitism immediately when you see it, and if it is an emergency, dial 911. You can learn more about how best to report antisemitism by visiting www.StandUpToJewishHate.org.

Rosh Chodesh Nisan is home to the month of Passover, where we celebrate freedom from slavery. We may be free now, but to what else are we chained in our modern lives? We'll discuss! Related is the translation of Egypt, or "Mitzrayim" as "narrowness." And as on Passover we celebrate "going from narrowness to freedom," we'll be joined by fat positivity activist, model and singer Lily Rose, who will speak on body image, Passover, fat positivity, and how the language we use has an effect on how we view ourselves.

All through Sub-Saharan Africa, black Jewish groups are emerging - or re-emerging. Some are heirs to origin stories that trace their lineage to the proverbial Ten Lost Tribes. Others are converts or children of converts. Most love Israel but are happy to stay put; the Beta Israel always dreamt of Jerusalem. In five classes, we'll be inspired by black Sub-Saharan Jews and black Jews in the US who are passionate about their Judaism.
We will get to know the Beta Israel from Ethiopia as they heroically traverse dangerous territory to get to Jerusalem, leaving behind mud huts and mud wall synagogues for new lives. We will stay with them as they transform themselves within a generation, adapting to modern Israel and becoming Ethiopian Israelis. We will learn of the goodwill of Israelis mixed with racism and massive public demonstrations by previously quiet people now asserting their rights.
Finally, we'll cross continents to talk about black Jews in the US. We will ask ourselves, "How do we embrace one another as we pursue the future of Judaism together?"
Upcoming dates: Sunday, March 12, April 2, 16, 23

We are heartbroken by the news of two devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria overnight. Right now, the death toll is in the thousands and rapidly rising. While an overwhelming number of homes and businesses have been destroyed, rescuers race to pull survivors from beneath the rubble.
Jewish Federations are on the ground with our partners, responding quickly in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. 150,000 people have been made homeless from the #earthquakes and are trying to survive during a bitter cold winter. We are supplying thousands of tents, heaters, thermal clothing, ready to eat meals, and first aid kits.
Did you know that February 20th is National Love Your Pet Day? This month we are partnering with ERJCC Houston's Meal on Wheels for a pet supply drive. Not only does Meals on Wheels deliver hot lunches to seniors in our community, but they also supplement with pet food to care for the senior's pets.

Come celebrate the New Year of the Trees with a kosher wine tasting in the style of the Tu b’Shvat seder and do a little planting, too!
In honor of the Kabbalistic Tu b’Shvat Seder’s four glasses of wine, we’ll be offering a tasting of kosher wines led by Ben Bailiff, the Texas Manager of local supplier, Royal Wine! We’ll also have lots of tasty bites and non-alcoholic drinks to go around.
Also, tradition says that if you plant parsley seeds on Tu b’Shvat, they’ll grow in time to use at your Passover seder! After our kosher wine tasting, you can get your hands a little dirty planting parsley seeds to take home and grow for your seder.
Celebrate the Jewish New Year of the Trees together and outdoors this Tu B’Shevat! Meet at 3:30 pm for some pre-clean-up snacks, and then we will start our clean-up project at about 3:45 pm. We will head out in groups to pick up trash around the lakes at Willow Water Hole.
But there’s more! The ancient mystics celebrated Tu B’Shevat with a seder to recognize all the beautiful trees and fruits and the changing of the seasons. So after you’re done cleaning up, grab a “Tu B’Shevat Seder in a Bag” to enjoy right there, or take it home and continue the celebration!

The crucial historical lessons of Black-Jewish cooperation are revisited and revived in this utterly fascinating, urgent call to action. With divisive seeds of hate taking root anew in the American landscape, a new generation also affirms their pledge to actively promote the values of social justice. This potent, inspiring story of unity, empathy and partnership validates the ubiquity of the human experience, and how freedom and equality for all can be achieved only when people come together.

ERJCC Bookfair Opening Night at Beth Yeshurun DAN GRUNFELD - By the Grace of the Game: The Holocaust, A Basketball Legacy, and an Unprecedented American Dream Saturday, October 22 | 8:00pm
When Lily and Alex Grunfeld escaped to America after surviving the Holocaust, few could have imagined their son Ernie would overcome bullying and tragedy to succeed on the basketball court – ultimately playing for the New York Knicks, winning Olympic gold, and working as an executive for the Washington Wizards. Ernie’s son Dan, once a basketball standout himself, takes readers on his family’s epic journey. From the trauma inflicted at Auschwitz to the top of the Olympic podium, Grunfeld recounts an American tale of unprecedented scale, weaving his heritage into a story that shines a light on basketball’s ability to unite people of all backgrounds. By the Grace of the Game reminds us that love, perseverance, and legacy can survive through generations.

Jewish Federation of Greater Houston Community Updates The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston is here to move our community from strength to strength by serving as the leading fundraiser, convener, and connector for our Jewish community. Recently, the Federation completed its 2022 Annual Campaign raising more than $17.7 million to support local organizations and programs as well as efforts in Israel and overseas. The Federation is pleased to announce important ways it is supporting and engaging with the community.
New Community Security Director Hired by the Federation Thanks to the generosity of Joan and Stanford z’l Alexander, the Federation was able to launch Houston’s Jewish Community Security Program and hire its first director. Alfred “Al” Tribble, a former special agent for the FBI with more than 27 years of experience, began in this role in June.
This position supports the entirety of our Jewish community. Tribble will work with leadership at our synagogues, schools, and other Jewish institutions to provide training, do threat assessments, and serve as our community liaison with law enforcement.
Because of the rise in antisemitism and gun violence, including specific incidents in Pittsburgh, Poway, and Colleyville, the Federation has undertaken this effort to help maintain community safety.
The first Town Halls on Security will be held at 7 pm on September 20 at the West Houston Jewish Community Center and on September 21 at The Emery/Weiner School. Community members are invited to attend. To register, please visit houstonjewish.org/security . On the website additional information is also available related to online trainings provided by Secure Community Network (SCN).

Beth Yeshurun is joining Faith Organizations across Houston - Muslim, Christian, and Jewish - in a friendly competition to collect food for the Houston Food Bank during National Hunger Awareness Month.
The competition kicks off September 1st and ends on the 30th. We’ll keep track of food collected and post the latest results weekly here on this website. Clergy and educators at the faith centers will provide faith-based messaging about hunger in their communities. Please contribute your non-perishable, not-expired foods throughout the month of September! We will keep you posted on our progress and how we are doing in the "competition"!
We will have donation bins: In the Bender Levy Lobby (the synagogue entrance at the "carpool" lane) In the Administrative Lobby (where the staff and Rabbi's offices are)
We invite you to share with us your simchas - births, engagement, weddings, or award and recognitions. Fill our Mazel Tov form with your information a picture and share your great news with the rest of the congregation. Click here to Submit your Simcha!
