The Empty Table Movement
The missing man table honors those who are captured or missing in action. This ritual gives a visual to the pain of someone’s absence: We wish they could be here, eating with us, celebrating with us, reassuring us that they are ok. We’ve taken elements from this military practice and adapted them to reflect a richly Jewish spirit. And a chair that sits empty for our dear ones in captivity, evocative of Kise shel Elijah, the seat we leave empty at brit Milah as an invitation for his prophetic visit. The seat is a pleading, prayerful outcry for reunification and the safety of all who are in harm’s way. 

Veterans Shabbat

Join us at Shabbat Renewal in our Freedman Levit Sanctuary as we honor our Veterans and hear from a special guest speaker, Abe Schnitzer.

Abe Schnitzer, born in Port Arthur, Texas, defied job security in 1942 to enlist in the Army Air Corp during WWII. Trained as a navigator, he led bombing missions over occupied France, Belgium, and Germany, including the first bombing of Berlin. Despite the peril, he flew 24 combat missions, earning accolades such as the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. Abe recently celebrated his 100th birthday on August 18th.

So that we may honor their service and commitment, we encourage all of our Veterans to wear their medals or decorations during this special occasion so that we can better recognize and thank them all.

"Israel’s security is Germany's raison d’être," declared Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz after Hamas' attack on Israeli towns and Kibbutzim on October 7, 2023. She will examine defining moments in this relationship over the past ten years and suggest that the love for Israel as the Jewish state and for Jews is framed by a commitment to Holocaust memory. The Beth Yeshurun Cemetery Association maintains two cemeteries – the Allen Parkway Cemetery location and the Post Oak Cemetery location. Solidarity Shabbat

Friday, October 27 | 6:00P

Our hearts are broken but our faith is unwavering; in these difficult days we are mourning the deaths of over 1,400 of our Israeli family and many international citizens in the horrific terrorist attacks on Israelis and global citizens on October 7th; we are advocating and praying for the over 200 kidnapped Israelis being held unlawfully by Hamas. It is in these times when we come together to stand in unwavering solidarity with Israel and with all the victims of this terrible attack and ongoing war, to stand unified in the face of hatred and to proclaim our love and pride as Jews and as Conservative/Masorti Jews.

From Thursday October 26th and through Sunday October 29th, we, members of Conservative/Masorti kehillot, schools, camps, youth programs, Jewish centers, and communities across the Globe will gather in solidarity as we come together to mark the 3rd Shabbat since the attacks of October 7th. Collectively singing, learning, praying, engaging in person and online, our human chain will connect us to one another, across our communities and across the world, as we come together united in our unwavering support of Israel.

Cemetery Lot Price Increase

The Beth Yeshurun Cemetery Association maintains two cemeteries – the Allen Parkway Cemetery location and the Post Oak Cemetery location. While both cemeteries are steeped in the historic tradition of our Congregation the Post Oak location has recently been enlarged and we have added our beautiful Sophia and Jack Bender Memorial Chapel. The Allen Parkway location currently has a very limited selection of available gravesites while our Post Oak Cemetery offers a wide selection of gravesites.

Buying a cemetery plot is never an easy decision and taking that step does inspire procrastination in many of us. There is, however, a certain piece of mind in making that decision now and not leaving the stress and anguish to other family members in time of need. We suggest you plan ahead and make this decision when your loved ones are not in crisis.
Beth Yeshurun Cemetery gravesite prices have remained constant since March 1, 2016. Due to increasing costs the Cemetery Association has voted to increase prices effective January 1, 2024. Current buyers will have the existing price protected if the sale is complete by December 31, 2023.

Join the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and Houston Community Partners in solidarity with Houston’s Jewish community in support of Israel. 

Important things to know if attending tonight: Enhanced security will be present at the event. Be prepared to show your ID. Backpacks and large purses/bags will not be permitted at the event. All bags are subject to search. Parking is limited. Carpooling and rideshare are encouraged.

During this time of anguish, anger, and concern, we want to again, share the remarks made by Rabbi Strauss this Shabbat and Festival service, as well as Avinu Shebashamayim from Cantor Goldman. You'll find 2023/5784 resources like the service schedule, Meals to Go, child care registration, FAQs and so much more. Important High Holy Day information, along with tickets to those members in good standing, were mailed August 18th.

Mindi Stern, Membership Director, is available to meet regarding outstanding account issues. Please call 713.666.1881, ex. 360 or email her at mstern@bethyeshurun.org to make an appointment. Accounts needing to be resolved must be done prior to noon on Friday, September 22nd in order to receive Kol Nidre/Yom Kippur Tickets. We are unable to accept payments during Chag.

Join us for a two-part program for Selichot! At 8:45pm, we begin with a dessert reception in Stein Hall. Then our clergy will host a panel discussion on "Tough Questions about the High Holy Days." Our panel, moderated by Jerrad Bloome, includes Rabbi Brian Strauss, Rabbi Steven Morgen, Rabbi Sarah Fort, and Rabbi Ranon Teller from Congregation Brith Shalom. We move to the Barg Sanctuary for our beautiful Selichot service, where we welcome our High Holy Day choir for the first time and change the Torah mantles to their High Holy Day whites.

We are delighted to invite Congregation Brith Shalom to join us for our Selichot Program.
 
This program and free and open to the community, but we ask you to register so we have desserts for everyone.
